Sports Journalism's Place within Journalism

In this statement by the author, Tim Stephens is trying to convey the fact that sports journalism is not taken as seriously by journalists outside of the field. The author describes how sports journalism’s purpose was to attract fans of sports to a newspaper. This goal for sports journalism created roots of promotion in writing rather than, “being the fourth-estate and the public watchdog on public officials.” This legacy set from the origins of sports journalism has continued to loom over journalists in this field, separated from the “real” journalists in many people's minds.
