If you don’t live under a rock, you should know that the Patriots made a shocking come-from-behind victory to win Super Bowl LI. After scoring only 3 points in the first half of the game, in the second half of the game they scored 31 points to net them the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.
One of my favorite things about sports is the history behind the game. This Super Bowl broke or matched 31 NFL records! With Tom Brady and his Patriots coming out in the first half looking like the Cleveland Browns, I find it amazing that Brady broke 3 single game Super Bowl records and 5 career Super Bowl records. Brady broke the single game record for most completions with 43, passes with 62, and passing yards with 466. Career Super Bowl records broken by Tom Terrific after his performance in Super Bowl LI include most Super Bowl appearances with 7, completions in the Super Bowl with 207, passes with 309, career passing yards in a Super Bowl with 2,071, and touchdown passes with 15. He also joined 2 other players in a 3-way tie for most Super Bowl wins.
Some more notable records broken by the Pats consist of Belichick grabbing two head coaching records for most Super Bowl appearances with 7, and Super Bowl victories with 5. James White had quite a game too having a part in 20 of the 34 points the Patriots scored.
This Super Bowl was filled with great plays but they were all overshadowed by Julian Edelman’s amazing catch on Atlanta Falcons cornerback Robert Alford’s leg. The ball was tipped up by Robert Alford and in dove the Falcons two safeties, Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen, joining Alford who fell when he tipped the ball and was still there. Even though the Patriots had only a 25% chance of catching the ball if anyone were to catch the ball, Edelman was able to catch it. Julio Jones’s beautiful sideline catch that had to be perfect will be overlooked because of Edelman’s catch. Julian Edelman said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that his catch was “70% luck” when asked how much of his catch was luck and how much was hand-eye coordination. If Edelman were to retire, Jimmy Fallon suggested that he could open a seafood restaurant and call it “Edelman’s Catch”. In a post on Snapchat by the NFL, they ranked the top 5 catches in the Super Bowl and that catch was number 1.

So, does this settle the debate on who is the greatest of all time? No. At least I don’t think so. The stats speak for themselves, but there will always be someone who argues that Brady is a big cheater. Do I think that Brady is the greatest of all time? Yes, I do. But there will always be debate.
This was arguably the greatest Super Bowl of all time, and congratulations if you were able to watch it. The Falcons had a good game…. for 30 minutes, the other 30 they were asleep, and the Pats quietly made sure the Falcons didn’t wake up to take the lead. That is the sentence that sums up Super Bowl LI.
